Explore the breathtaking Bicaj-Brekije Passage - A Scenic Hike

Take a picturesque journey through the stunning Bicaj-Brekije Passage, starting from Mustafë Village (450m) and winding through Tërshen village (at 1050m and 1300m) before ascending to 1750m at 'Stanet e Bicaj' ('Bicaj Stalls'), and finally descending to Brekije Village (1350m).

This 14.5km walking trail is crucial for locals, used for transporting cattle and linking neighboring villages. Spring and autumn offer the best opportunities to enjoy this route.

While trekking, you'll encounter a variety of vegetation, from colorful flowers and shrubs to dense pine and oak forests. The Tërshen neighborhood boasts charming alpine houses and small streams with quaint wooden bridges. You'll also stumble upon a fully functional water mill dating back to the 1940s.

Continuing through a pine forest, you'll reach the Vojvoda meadows at 1750m altitude, known as 'Stanet e Bicajve' ('Bicaj Stalls'). These meadows serve as grazing land during the warmer months.

Descending towards Brekije Village, you'll pass through a captivating oak forest, resembling a vibrant tunnel during autumn. Along the trail, you'll come across cattle stables and unique roofed huts covered with dry grass, traditional shelters for livestock.

Approaching Brekije village, you'll be greeted by agricultural fields and charming alpine-style houses surrounded by fruit trees. The village boasts a refreshing spring water source.

Brekije Village is located 21 km from Kukës city center, accessible via an unpaved road suitable for light vehicles. This trail includes a 1400m ascent from Mustafë to 'Stanet e Bicajt' and a 600m descent from 'Stanet e Bicajt' to Brekije, requiring approximately 7-8 hours to complete.

The path is generally well-maintained, making it suitable for individuals in good physical condition or regular sports enthusiasts. Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons for this hike, as winter conditions may result in isolation due to adverse weather and snowfall.
